The following films/videos are approved as supplementary instructional materials for the content areas and grade levels indicated.  Parents/Guardians may select to opt their student out of the assignment by notifying the school and requesting an alternate assignment.  MPAA ratings are indicated.  Unrated films are labeled NR.

Language Arts 7 
Cay, The (NR) The Cay is the story of Phillip, a young boy, who with his mother, are trying to escape the war and head back to their home in Virginia during World War II.  Their ship is torpedoed, and Phillip is separated from his mother.  He awakens to find he is blind and adrift on a life raft with a black man and a cat named Stew cat, where they eventually land on a deserted island.  A story not only of survival, but of friendship and overcoming prejudices.

Anne Frank (Entire Video or Excerpt) (NR)  When the war began, she was only a little girl.  When it ended, she was the voice of a   Generation...A compassionate and sensitive televisual portrait of the Holocaust’s   greatest diarist.  Harrowing story of a young Jewish girl who, with her family and   their friends is forced into hiding in an attic in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. 
The Mighty (PG-13) This film depicts a life-changing friendship which develops between the physically deformed son of a convicted felon and the teenager who’s hired to be his reading tutor.  [elements of V]

Ever After (PG-13) A young woman of the 16th century is as independent and wise as she is beautiful and kind.  Against remarkable odds, she stands up to her scheming stepmother and works miracles on the lives of everyone around her, including the crown prince of France. 
Henry V (PG-13) King Henry V of England is insulted by the King of France.  As a result, he leads his army into battle against France.  Along the way, the young king must struggle with the sinking morale of his troops and his own inner doubts. 
Robin Hood:  Prince of Thieves (Excerpt) (PG-13)  Excerpts from this Robin Hood tale provide a visual picture of feudal life and the  contrast of rich and poor.  [some N, V]
